Entry #11

This week has been really hectic for me as i try to make the finishing touches and final adjustments to my project. I am planning on counting up all the money and donating them to the shelter either this weekend or sometime next week. I have to pay a visit to the recycling station one last time as well, to cash in all the bottles I've collected. I'm not sure how much the total amount will be, but i still feel pretty accomplished for making it this far. As for the presentation, i have to make some changes to mine. Mr. Brodsky (if you're reading this hey!!!) said that we shouldnt have too many words per slide, and to be honest, i have a lot of words on each slide LOL. The powerpoint is still going along, and i hope to finish it in the next couple of days.

The image i chose was this one of the recycling station i go to. I thought it was pretty relevant since i'm going back there in a few days.

This week was actually a pretty productive week for me. I worked on my slideshow presentation a couple times, since i got a pretty good amount of pictures when i visited the shelter two weeks ago. I think the slide show is going good. Since the presentation date is coming up rather soon, i have to start preparing what i want to say and rehearsing my lines so that when the date actually comes i won't be really nervous. As for the fundraising, i things are progressing slowly. I've stopped collecting money from the donation jar because it's pretty much empty LOL. The jar was just a way for the class to understand my project a little more, and i think it did do that. My goal at the beginning of the year has been modified quite a lot, since i found it really hard to raise money on my own. And i figured that any dollar i donate would help the shelter :)

This picture is pretty self explanatory, and i think it describes my project really well.

To be honest, i didn't really do too much for my project this week. My family is still supporting me a lot in my project and all my uncles and aunts have agreed to collect cans and bottles for me to donate, which i thought was really nice. :) Just to update you on my last post, i visited the shelter and got to meet a couple of the kids there. They wee really friendly and they weren't shy at all! It was a really fun experience, and i actually brought two of my friends along with me (Carlo and Christine) and we had a great time. I'm very excited to come back, which i plan on doing a couple more times before this project ends. Overall, i'd say i'm pretty on track with my project.

I chose this picture because this is basically how the shelter looks like. It provides a really safe environment where the kids could feel comfortable.

I have some very exciting news for tomorrow! My sisters informed me that tomorrow, InnVision Shelter will be hosting a movie night! This is an event where all the kids who live at the shelter and others can come join, and the movie that will be playing is Frozen (which is one of my favorites ^-^)! A few of the members from my sister's club will be attending as well as myself and a few friends i invited. I figured this would be the PERFECT opportunity to bond with the kids there and really get to know the shelter. I also plan on pitching my project idea tomorrow as well. I am going to just tell them the whole purpose behind my project and hopefully everything will turn out fine and they'll be on board. Again, I'm really excited for tomorrow and I am sure it will be a fantastic event!

Since this movie will be playing at movie night, I thought it would be perfect to use this as my picture for this week.

Lately I have just been working on the power point for my presentation in May as well as tallying up my total earnings at home. I have a fair number of slides prepared, some of them giving a little information on the shelter itself and some of them including my personal reasons for doing this project. In general, I think the power point is moving along well. :)  My mom has really been helping me a lot throughout this project (even though she is not my mentor) and has given me a lot of support and encouragement. As of this week, i have raised another $27, which may not seem like a lot at all, but it really is hard trying to raise money, especially because i have no job. I'm also very proud of myself for not caving in and asking my mom for money or anything, which i think really shows my dedication towards my goal.

This image represents how i am preparing for the final product and how i'm trying to get everything into place.

Over the past week, i haven't really done anything totally new with my project. I have started on the power-point presentation but i still need to wait until i visit the shelter and take pictures and videos to complete my presentation. The thing that keeps me motivated for this project is the bigger picture, which is to donate the money to the people who truly need it, and that's what keeps me excited about the project. I'm still bothered by the success of my project so far, because to be honest, I am nowhere near my goal. I hope to reach my goal (or at least come close) in the next couple of weeks. I am not too happy with ,y progress, but i know that it takes time. This was a lot harder than i thought it would be, especially because i am doing this on my own without the help of my mom.

This picture makes me really motivated to keep trying my hardest to raise money for the homeless, because i know a lot of people aren't as fortunate as i am and have no home to live in.

rePLANET Recycling:     http://replanetusa.com/

  • I found this site while doing some research on how to earn money from recycling. I found this website to be very useful in my project. It gave me lots of information on recycling (how much each item was worth, where the recycling centers were located, etc.). I actually went to one of the recycling stations last weekend to cash in my bottles and cans, which was a pretty cool experience. :) I plan on paying another visit there in a couple of weeks. Hopefully by then i'll have a lot more recyclables with the help from my family members (they drink a lot of sodas and teas LOL).
Ways to fundraise:            http://www.squidoo.com/101_ways_to_fundraise

  • I found this website while googling different ways to make money. This was actually the source I've been using for my project, and its where i got all my ideas, like recycling, from. I think this website is really helpful because it gives me really fun and creative ways to try to raise money.

I sort of hit a bump a road in my project. I'm trying to come up with different ways of raising enough money to meet my goal, but it's getting a lot harder than i thought. My mom is taking to a reclining station this weekend to see how much cans and bottles I've collected and how much money I have raised so far. I know it won't be a lot, but I'm hoping I will have collected at least $20 worth of cans and bottles (fingers crossed)!! I'm planning to visit Inn Vision soon and let them know about this project and what I'm planning to do, and hopefully they give me permission to take pictures and record videos! If all goes well, I hope to raise $150 by the end of March, since I will also be selling off some of my old clothes in a thrift store and having sort of a bake sale for my family and friends.

I think I have made pretty good progress on my project so far. As of today, I have created a donation jar in the classroom for all who want to help contribute to my project. From the looks of it, there haven't been a crazy amount of donations, but i wasn't really expecting to get too much out of the jar. My main source for raising the money is from bakes sales and recycling cans and bottles. So far, my family has collected over two trash bags filled with bottles and a trash bag filled with cans. I plan on taking these to recycling stations every week or so. My cousins drink a lot of soda so I think I'll be able to make a fair amount of money off these cans and bottles. I hope that with the support of my friends and family members I'll be able to earn at least $75 dollars by this weekend. Below is a picture I took of the bottles that I have collected. This picture signifies the progress I've made so far and the amount of time I've spent on it (I've been saving up bottles for a pretty long time).

My 20% Project is going to be to fundraise money to donate to Inn Vision homeless shelter, and my goal is to raise at least $400. I am going to create a slideshow including a bunch of pictures and videos I have recorded throughout this experience. People should care about this project because not only am I trying to make a difference in the community, but this may also inspire others to help out their community as well. I care about this project because I want to find a way to help those less fortunate than I am. Between now and the beginning of May, I'll stay busy in class during 20% project time by editing my pictures and videos and collecting and counting up my earnings thus far. Between now and the beginning of May, I'll stay busy on my 20% project out of class by actually fundraising the money.

I am pretty confident in my Pitch Presentation just because this is a cause i am very passionate about, and I'm not really that nervous about presenting it.

So far, I really am enjoying this 20% project. I like how it is so open, meaning I won't have to follow too many rules. I like that I get to do what I want to do. As of right now, my project is going to be to try to fund raise a good amount of money to donate to a shelter that i am very fond of, called InnVision shelter. I volunteered at Innvision once, and I really enjoyed it. My sister also volunteers there. In fact, she has a club at school called the InnVision club. I was thinking that maybe i could work with her club to try to raise money to support the shelter, because 100% of their donations go into the shelter itself. My goal is try to raise at least $300, and I know that is a real challenge. I hope this project also inspires other people to help out in the community as well. I feel that by doing this project, I am, like the blog title says, lending a hand.
